Portfolio (The Awesome Version) – It's Coming!!!

At deviantART, we want all artists to thrive. We've spent the last few months working on a Portfolio tool that helps artists promote themselves online in a highly professional manner without having to deal with the hassles of web design, hosting, coding, and so on. We looked into all sorts of online and off-line portfolios, talked to artists, students, professors, art schools, creative professionals, focus groups, etc., to learn how to build the best system on the Internet for formal presentation and review of artwork. As we begin beta testing the Portfolio system we wanted to share some of our key findings and design decisions with you.

Designing the Portfolio Engine – Key Findings

Portfolio will be used by many different types of people and is therefore designed to meet and exceed all needs. It serves artists by concentrating entirely on presenting work so the art speaks for itself; and, simultaneously serves the people who look at and evaluate art day in and day out by using an open, easy and efficient navigation. Simplicity is the key to both of these core goals and functions.

  • Many artists said that portfolios have to be easy and quick to build so special versions can be organized and compiled on the fly to meet the specific requests of a proposal or submission. For example, you may want to submit only your landscape photography to clients and not distract them with your portrait photography. We built a super-simple editing wizard, threw in a ton of storage with reasonable file formats and requirements so building and re-building a custom Portfolio is a snap.
  • Clients and professors told us that artists overwork the design of the portfolio and that, instead, artists should concentrate on picking and showcasing their strongest art. We've made the configuration options in Portfolio simple and highly functional. The configuration wizard brings you through a short process where you select layout options, fill in biographical and contact information. Then you can concentrate your time on selecting and organizing the art. You get complete access to your art and can pull images from your hard drive, from your deviantART galleries or from your prior Portfolios.
  • We were told that online portfolios failed and lost credibility for artists when they didn't function correctly or as intended. We made certain that Portfolio is optimized to all major browsers on all major operating systems (even the iPhone). We've got a team of highly skilled engineers and have lots of redundant servers in a top notch hosting facility to make sure that your portfolio is always online. dA's got your back.
  • We were told that handmade websites used as portfolios often end up confusing clients and teachers when the navigation is inventive, but not necessarily obvious. So, the navigation on Portfolio is designed to be elegantly obvious, simple and reliable.
  • Many schools and employers said that a portfolio should be a showcase for the artist's best and most recent work. Too much content overwhelms a good pitch or academic application. Portfolio has up to 4 galleries that hold up to 18 images each for a maximum of 72 images overall. This encourages selectivity. And, if you don't use one or more of the 18 slots in a gallery or if you use just two of the four galleries, the Portfolio structure automatically adjusts and nobody will know that the Portfolio could have held more.
  • We were told portfolios should go straight to the point of showcasing the artwork. So the backgrounds in Portfolio act like neutral gallery backgrounds. We chose placements for the artwork that are stable so the eye doesn't have to hunt around from image to image. There are no textures, overwhelming colors or patterns to interfere with the review of the art.
  • First impressions are critical. Portfolio opens with a huge home page image that dominates the space so the artist can make their best image the first statement of the Portfolio.
  • Other online portfolios are pretty dreadful and some pitch the portfolio website more than the artist. In the worst models, there are Google ads next to images (for shame). In our Portfolio there are no advertisements at all. You get a unique professional URL without the "deviantART" name. There is only one sales pitch on the page – - you – - not us.
  • Artists love deviantART, but sometimes being a "deviant" can be a problem in professional situations—like presenting yourself to a business or a school. With the free version of Portfolio, we allow you to use a custom "*" domain and we quietly say "Powered By dA" in the bottom-left corner of the page. In the Premium version of Portfolio, no dA branding shows up on public pages, and you can even select a URL that has no implied association to deviantART whatsoever.

Enough Talk – What do they look like?

All the essentials are there. We threw all kinds of art at this design. Portfolio (The Awesome Version) came through.
Here are some sample Portfolio's put together by our super talented in-house design team using dA Portfolio:

We're Pretty Freaking Proud of Portfolio!

Millions of members of deviantART will all be able to take advantage of Portfolio. Artists will soon have, absolutely free, an industry standard tool to showcase themselves in a clean, simple and pure design.

We showed this design to hundreds of people in the arts before release. It works. When you use Portfolio we expect you'll love it. We do.

ok so 1. Needs support for Panoramas Vertical mostly (scrolling).

2. If the Title can be Top horizontal, can't it be made so image column has a Vertical option when Horizontal Title is selected?

The one question i need to know is.. Can someone NOT a member of deviantart see the portfolio!!? My space on deviantart is useless to someone that is not signed up!

I need a space EVERYONE can see!

This looks fantastic- I can't wait 'til it's out.
Two questions-
1) Can you change the order of links? I think Artist's Bio should be last.
2) Can you post Flash and/or video?

Overall, I think the portfolio engine is a little buggy, but great and very helpful! I currently have it as my web site. I have just a couple of suggestions on how to improve it and make it better. First, the homepage doesn't show up well on my mobile phone and fails to load the primary picture. All of the other links and pages look o.k. Next, I would like to be able to add more galleries. Maybe for premium members, such as myself?

I've been enjoying it for a while now but too many errors have been occuring w/portfolio storage and uploading my resume that I may end up leaving it for richer soils :(
sorry DA

why arent we allowed to have more than 4 galleries. In my case I want to showcase Compositing, 3D, Prototyping, The various exhibitions I have participated in etc, Book covers etc..
This is so great, but lack a little bit from being amazing.. :)
We shouldnt be constrained to 4 galleries, maybe 14...
no server talk please, u could easily make a maximum count for images.:)

Not sure if this is the right place to report this but since the beta feedback is now closed...
The text in the toolbar on the left hand side is badly formatted so that mine says
Itti's Photogra on one line and
phy on the next.

It needs better search engine support. Then I would be really happy.

You guys need to remove those apostrophes in the article title... but otherwise, this whole Portfolio business is making me one happy college sophomore! :)

This seriously may have helped me save a lot of time in the future. When I apply to the graphic design program next year in school, I can likely use this interface to show off my work. Thank you so much for bringing the Portfolios to us, dA! =D

question about the password protection.... can you password each gallery seperatly? so clients can login and not worry about other ppl seeing the images?
TheBurningQuill Featured By Owner Jul 17, 2009
I have a question!!

For free portfolios, you can have up to 4 galleries.

What abour premium folios? I have 4 galleries, and I'm not allowed to add more than 4?

Great article! I'm definitely going to be making a portfolio. c:

On an unrelated note, for professionalism, please learn to use apostrophes!
Sorry to be a grammar Nazi, but it's so disappointing to see respected people misusing grammar. Just want to help you look more pro! c:

There shouldn't be apostrophes in the words portfolios, hows, whys, etc. Apostrophes are to denote possession or abbreviation only!

Thanks~ <3

wow my comment sounded mean, I love the portfolio idea. I especially love how deviantarts name isnt tagged all over, thats really exciting!! I dont care much for personal designing options for the webpage, I like the first example portfolio design just fine.

Good job! Cant wait to see it come out. Ill subscribe if you do.
IronRosePetal Featured By Owner Jul 12, 2009
While browsing through some of those example portfolios, the qaulity of their artwork seems downsized because the edges look at rigity and pixelated.

I personally would not want a possible employer looking at my art if its not in its original condition.

The design and navigation is great, but viewing the artwork is kind of ugly, especially looking at graphic design pieces. You can totally tell the edges are all rigid from the downsize. It almost looks like they did that themselves, and it makes it look bad.

This is an awesome new feature. Thanks for putting this together. I can't wait to begin taking advantage of it and it will definitely get me to subscribe.

Pretty wicked. As long as you can put the CC licenses in there somehow, those are cute.

On a related note, If anything, I think the user pages should be treated like separate "entities" on DA proper like on YouTube's channel pages, completely remove the footer, make the header a smaller entity, and allow the rest of the thing to be CSS'd too.

This will turn the need for an own homepage/webpage/whatever for a photographer almost obselate.

One question: are multiple-language versions supported? I mean... Not all of DA users are from the US/Canada/UK/Australia. Some of us would preferr to have a native language version too for our 'local' costumers.
goatheadcorp Featured By Owner Jul 9, 2009
i wanna ask, is this portfolio will still exist when our subs end? coz i might wanna buy my own domain when this portfolio is done and not in betatesting status anymore :)
swandundee Featured By Owner Jul 9, 2009  Hobbyist Photographer
i cant change the font sizes, i am using darkfolio, colours seem to be set on red or wont set to the col i choose.i think it needs a better header option, infact lots more things to alter, we done font size, what about fonts?, or my own chiose of colours for background.
maybe i missed somthing.....but its not quite ther yet!
